Non-credit Microsoft Office Short Course Descriptions

The Part 1 - Introduction classes are always offered each semester. The others are taught as scheduling permits.
Classes are scheduled on two weekday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm or on Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Introduction to Windows

Microsoft Windows is an operating system that lets you use a graphical user interface to control the basic operation of your computer and the programs you run on it. In this workshop you will learn to use the mouse to navigate through the environment. You will also learn to manage files and folders, to customize windows to suit your preferences, and much more. No prior knowledge of computers is necessary.

Microsoft Word Part 1 - Introduction

Word processing is more than an automated typewriter. Microsoft Word is a powerful computer program that helps you create documents that communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. This workshop teaches you the basic features such as copying and moving text, using proofing tools, formatting, and working with tables. Experience with Microsoft Windows is required.

Microsoft Word Part 2 - Intermediate

This workshop is a continuation of part 1. Students will learn to merge documents, create labels, work with graphics, and share information with other programs by linking and embedding objects. Experience with Microsoft Word is required.

Microsoft Word Part 3 - Advanced

This workshop is a continuation of part 2 and is not for beginners. You will learn to work with large documents, columns, WordArt, charts, and forms. You will also learn about the Compare Documents and Track Changes features that allow you to develop documents with the collaboration of others. Experience with Microsoft Word is required.

Microsoft Excel Part 1 - Introduction

This workshop teaches you the basics of spreadsheet software. You will learn to build and edit worksheets, how to format a worksheet, how to use colors, patterns, and borders to enhance a worksheet, how to create and edit charts, and how to manage workbooks. Experience with Microsoft Windows is required.

Microsoft Excel Part 2 - Intermediate

This is a continuation of part 1. You will learn to work with formulas and functions, use lists and analyze list data, enhance charts and worksheets, and how to automate tasks using macros. Experience with Excel is required.

Microsoft Excel Part 3 - Advanced

This is a continuation of part 2 and is not for beginners. In this workshop you will learn about using what-if analysis and how to exchange data with other programs. You will also learn how to use tools and options designed to help you work more efficiently. These tools help you eliminate repetitive typing chores, save calculation time when using a large worksheet, create templates, as well as how to customize basic Excel features. Experience with Microsoft Excel is required.

Microsoft Access Part 1 - Introduction

Microsoft Access is a popular electronic database program that can be used for thousands of tasks, such as managing payroll, personnel, sales, production, inventory, and many others. In this workshop you will learn the various components of a database and how to plan a database. You will also learn how to enter, edit, and sort records and how to create forms, queries, and reports.

Microsoft Access Part 2 - Intermediate

This workshop is a continuation of part 1. You will learn to modify a database structure by adding new tables and linking them in one-to-many relationships to create a relational database and by modifying field properties. You will also learn how to create multiple table queries and complex reports. Experience with Microsoft Access is required.

Microsoft Access Part 3 - Advanced

This is a continuation of part 2 and is not for beginners. In this workshop you will learn to create advanced queries and macros, and how to add complex objects to a form. You will also learn how to manage database objects, how to use the Documenter, and how to create a "switchboard" that gives the user access to only those objects that he or she actually uses. Experience with Microsoft Access is required.

Microsoft PowerPoint Part 1 - Introduction

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation graphics program that allows you to transform your ideas into professional electronic slide show or as 35-mm slides and transparency masters to display on an overhead projector. In this workshop you will learn the basics of planning, creating, and modifying a presentation. You will also learn how to enhance a presentation by using clipart and charts, and by setting slide show timings and animation effects. Experience with Microsoft Windows is required.

Microsoft PowerPoint Part 2 - Intermediate

In this continuation of part 1 you will learn to customize a presentation, how to enhance charts, how to work with embedded and linked objects, and how to use custom slide show features. This workshop requires some experience with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Introduction to Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is an integrated desktop information management program that lets you manage your personal and business information and communicate with others. Information such as your electronic messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, and files can all be managed with this exciting new program. In this workshop you will be introduced to the components of Outlook to learn how to use these various tools.
